FD19: Build a Better Bus Stop is our design competition that will address some of the issues of the typical bus stop. How do we reduce particulate matter for those waiting for bus stops? And how do we make a bus stop fun?
We have given 11 teams $250, four hours on our CNC router (basically, a giant printer for wood), and freedom to create whatever they want, as long as it’s a bus stop.
On May 4, they will build their prototypes at our headquarters. We will have judges determine a winner, but we will also have you pick your favorite stop.
Before the competition, let’s get to know the teams. Today, we kick off our Meet the Bus Stop Builders video series with our first FD19 team: Motion Studio at Fitzpatrick Architects.
This group of designers and architects has reached out from Tyler, Texas, to be a part of the design competition. Prior to entering, Fitzpatrick Architects began working with the city of Tyler on bus stop designs as an office initiative. They have offered pro-bono design options and consulting services to Tyler in an effort to inspire future projects that address the insufficiencies of a common bus stop.
For FD19, “We’re operating rogue,” says Mary Alice Guidry, team leader of the newly formed Motion Studio at Fitzpatrick Architects. This is the first time members from the firm have branched off to compete in a design competition.
The team explained that the FD19: Build a Better Bus Stop aligns with their firm’s goals. They intend to create a bus stop that can act as a catalyst for the city by creating a space that activates the senses while protecting passengers from harmful particulate matter.
“We’re excited to go and see it through,” Guidry says. Motion Studio plans to bring their prototype back home to display it next to an ordinary bus stop outside of their office building in Tyler to show their community what is possible.
Join us on May 4 from 6-9 pm in front of the Better Block’s Dallas office (700 West Davis) to enjoy music and vendors while watching the designers’ ideas come to life.
FD19 is made possible by the following sponsors: Nunzio Marc DeSantis Architects, Downwinders at Risk, OmniPlan, Craig Schenkel Properties, 3Headed Monster, and Oddfellows.
