CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2025 COHORT!

Over the course of six months, the 2025 BBU cohort was guided by a Better Block curriculum, centered around our community-powered urban design process to re-activate neighborhoods. Equipped with this knowledge, each student designed and implemented a mini Better Block project envisioned under the scope of public safety.

SOUTH PARK POP-UP PARK

The Challenge: Public spaces for gathering are limited. Survey respondents commented that there isn’t anywhere to gather or sit down unless you’re spending money somewhere. Streets are overly wide, most crossings are unmarked, and conditions could be more comfortable for walking and bicycling

The Solution: During one of the community’s well-attended quarterly Walkabouts, we transformed five parking spaces into a pop-up park with temporary curb extensions and temporarily rebalanced the street by narrowing the overly wide 15-foot travel lane to a standard 11ft. We also reduced the corner crossing distance from 56ft to 38ft, which significantly slowed vehicle speeds and gave pedestrians more time and comfort to cross safely.

Support the Next Generation of Community Leaders!

We’re excited to gear up for another year of Better Block University and continue empowering community leaders to bring their ideas to life. To make this possible, we’re seeking financial support from individuals and organizations who believe in the power of placemaking and community-driven projects. Your support helps future cohorts design, build, and activate meaningful projects in neighborhoods across the country.
